If you’ve fulfilled your desire to own your own home sauna, you’re probably very fond of the idea of being able to relax and sweat it out in peace at any time. By the way, you also promote your health with a regular visit to the sauna. However, it is important to pay attention to how often you go to the sauna, so that you do not expose yourself to health risks such as skin aging. If you are a beginner, you should follow the main rules and regulations for sauna use. Of course, it can be tempting to get into the sauna every day – but sauna use should also be taken with a grain of salt.

Going to the sauna strengthens your immune system, increases your sense of well-being, health and boosts your circulation. Other positive side effects include alleviating irritability, insomnia, headaches and preventing illness. Experts recommend that you use the sauna regularly. In order for you to achieve long-term positive effects from saunas, it is advisable to go to the sauna once or twice a week. Especially in the beginning, your body needs some time to get used to the unfamiliar heat – you should therefore approach it slowly. If you absolutely want to use your sauna every day, there is nothing against it if you use it properly – but you should only take short sauna phases of 8-10 minutes when relaxing every day after work.
How often should I go to the sauna in the beginning?
If you are a sauna beginner and have been able to fulfill your dream of having your own sauna at home, it makes sense to start slowly at the beginning. You should not stay too long in the cabin and not necessarily go in every day, because the sweating can quickly overwhelm your body and circulation if you are not yet used to it. The general recommendation of sauna experts is to sauna once a week in the so-called “3-phase method”. This method is also highly recommended after exercise to relax your muscles and recover.

Phase 1 – Preparation
The so-called “3-phase method” is ideal for you if you don’t want to use your sauna every day. The first phase, the “preparation phase”, starts in the bathroom. You should go to the toilet before going to the sauna, because sweating stimulates the activity of the kidneys. You should also take a shower and dry off well afterwards, because dry skin sweats better than wet skin. We also recommend that you take a warm foot bath beforehand – this will help to promote sweating. Traditionally, the sauna is only to be used naked, but you should still take a sauna towel with you so that you don’t touch the wood directly with your sweating body.
Phase 2 – Sweating
In the second phase, the “sweating phase”, you should choose a comfortable place. As heat rises, the air temperature is naturally higher in the upper seats compared to the lower seats. To start with, we recommend a sauna session of 10-15 minutes, of which the last three minutes should be spent sitting upright. Of course, you can adjust this duration to your personal well-being and decrease or increase the time.
Phase 3 – Cool down
The third and final phase is the “cool down” phase, where you should go outside for a few minutes to cool down your airways and get some oxygen. You should also take a lukewarm or cold shower or jump into the pool if you have one nearby. Since saunas are all about relaxation, you should avoid scheduling your appointments right after a sauna session. We can only recommend that you rest lying on the sofa for a while after your cooling shower.

Afterwards you can dry yourself off and take a rest period, which should last approximately as long as your sauna session. If you like, you can make one or two more runs in the sauna afterwards. These should also be followed by cooling down and resting. Afterwards, you should ensure that you drink enough fluids, as the sauna heat can also be quite stressful and dehydrating. Fresh air is also a helpful measure after taking a sauna. If you are unsure at the beginning, we recommend you to sauna once a week according to the “3-phase method” presented above. Later, when your body and circulation have become accustomed to the heat, you can adjust the whole routine to your personal preferences.

If you want to use your sauna as often as possible, you should do so primarily according to your health and general condition. Unfortunately, we cannot give you a general answer as to how often sauna is healthy for you. If you are unsure, it is advisable to use the sauna once a week or to seek medical advice. In the beginning you should stick to regular sauna phases and not sweat too often. If you feel very fit and are already passionate about saunas, then a sauna session every day should be possible. As long as you stay sensible and follow some important rules, you should enjoy your sauna for a long time.
