Causes of cold hands and feet
I’m always cold, and I’m not alone in that. Many women know the feeling of cold feet and clammy fingers and the associated discomfort throughout the body. So that you suffer less from constant cold in the future and the poor man or friend does not always have to serve as a warmth donor, we have put together some useful tips for you below. But why do we freeze so quickly in the first place? The perception of different temperatures is essential for human survival in order to protect the body from freezing or overheating. Thermoreceptors in the skin and mucous membranes register temperature changes when they come into contact with a cold object, air or radiation, for example. This information then reaches our brain via nerve fibers and a corresponding reaction is triggered. For example, a gust of fresh wind sends a shiver down our spine and the first sip of a cold drink causes goose bumps all over our body. In such situations, the human body always tries to maintain a normal temperature of 36.3 to 37.4 °C. This is why the temperature of the human body is always kept at a constant level. Even when the body temperature drops to 35 °C, the person begins to freeze and shiver. When shivering, muscle groups are involuntarily contracted to produce heat. At rest, the heart, liver, kidneys and brain are responsible for more than 70% of heat production; the skin and muscles do not provide a large proportion of heat until the body is in motion. If the heat consumption exceeds the heat production, we become cold and uncomfortable and our mood drops. However, even the “I’m always cold” feeling has a tiny advantage for all those who want to lose weight, because whoever shivers uses more energy to keep the body temperature constant and thus burns more calories. Nevertheless, freezing is and remains of course an unpleasant feeling that we all want to prevent as much as possible and with our tips the “I’m always cold” – times are soon over!
Put an end to “I’m always cold” – Our tips for a comfortably warm body feeling
To counteract the cold feeling, you should get to the bottom of the cause of the freezing. Where do I freeze the most and why? I am always cold – for many people this statement refers especially to the hands and feet. The extremities have a particular tendency to get cold, as they are only supplied with a small amount of blood when the outside temperature is low. In this way, the difference between the temperature of the fingers or feet and the temperature outside the body can be reduced and energy for warming is saved for supplying the vital organs. From a purely biological point of view, this makes sense, of course, but cold hands and feet are still just terribly uncomfortable. People who are cold catch colds more easily, for example, and are more unhappy. Stiff, clammy fingers impair mobility, and cold feet interfere with falling asleep. Fortunately, we know a few tips on how you can help your body to produce and store heat and thus finally get rid of that “I’m always cold” feeling.
Food against cold
Maintaining body temperature uses a lot of energy. Eating rich foods can help the body produce body heat and prevent early freezing. If you spend a lot of time outdoors in winter, you should eat enough nutrients. Especially warming stews, for example, are a good way to do this. Of course, a warm drink is also a must.
Preparation for a cold day
Especially in the cold seasons, good preparation can prevent freezing due to poor clothing. Always check the temperature and look at the forecast for the day to be prepared for weather changes and avoid that “I’m always cold” feeling. It can be useful to observe what people walking by the window are wearing and adjust your own outfit accordingly in terms of warmth or water resistance.
Appropriate clothing
Compared to humans, animals have an incredible advantage in thermoregulation due to their fur and do not know the “I’m always cold” feeling. That’s why clothing made of wool can help insulate your own body heat and keep your body at a temperature that matches the outside temperature. Worn directly against the skin, wool clothing can keep the body temperature constant in both cold and warmer weather. In addition, it’s always important to remember that one of the ways you lose the most heat is through your head – so hats are as important as the right jacket and shoes.
Warmth and relaxation at home
Our phrase “I’m always cold” shouldn’t really be heard at home. If your feet are cold, treat yourself to an extensive foot care routine with a foot bath for a long-lasting feeling of warmth – ideally as part of a proper body care routine. If you also suffer from cold hands and feet at night, for example because your partner doesn’t want to do without the open window in the bedroom, we recommend an electric blanket or foot warmer.
Little helpers against the “I’m always cold” feeling
Cuddly heated blanket
What could be nicer than getting into an already pre-warmed bed after a long day, frozen through? With an electric blanket, any feeling of cold immediately disappears from your body and you can relax. A high-quality electric blanket has multiple heat settings and a digital timer, so overheating your body while sleeping is prevented. Our product recommendation can even be easily washed in the washing machine.
Electric hand and foot warmer
If only your hands or feet are freezing, an electric hand and foot warmer is worth its weight in gold and much more effective than all the cozy socks in the world. Cold fingers and toes can be specifically warmed up and the temperature can be regulated via a remote control. A hand and foot warmer is perfect for icy hands after skiing or for keeping feet warm during long conversations on the patio, effectively preventing that “I’m always cold” feeling. In case of stomach ache or tension, the heating pad can also simply be placed on the painful areas and relieve discomfort. Compared to a hot water bottle, it remains constantly warm without cooling down quickly.
Warming ointment
If you want to warm specific parts of the body naturally, it is best to use the tried and tested horse ointment. Shivering and freezing can quickly lead to tension, which usually still hurts stubbornly even after you have already warmed up with an electric blanket or warm shower. The ointment nourishes and regenerates the skin and warms intensively. In this way, tension can be released and cramped muscles relaxed. Herbal ingredients are, to name a few, lemon balm, chamomile, hops, valerian, yarrow and fennel.
Wool functional shirt
I’m always cold – those days are gone forever with warming functional shirts made of wool. Consistently worn directly on the skin, the material warms and keeps the optimal body temperature at a constant level. The shirt is breathable and moisture regulating. We recommend clothing that is at least 60% pure wool to prevent any feeling of cold.
