Vegetarian BBQ: Potatoes – and that’s it?

Our guide to vegetarian grilling ideas

The days are getting longer – the perfect time to get the grill out of the storage closet! But when friends come to visit, sometimes it gets tricky. There’s the one who isn’t meat, but just the baked potato wouldn’t do. Luckily, though, there are plenty of vegetarian grilling ideas that will not only wow vegetarians, but also give meat lovers a change of pace from the grill. We show you our favorite versions of grilled vegetables and fruits.

Vegetarian bbq ideas: typical vegetables

As you might have guessed, some vegetables are better suited for the grill than others. The first things that come to mind are corn on the cob, potatoes and mushrooms. But peppers, tomatoes, onions, eggplants and zucchini are also typical grilling candidates. Because they are relatively large, zucchini and eggplant are especially good for stuffing. But why not fill a barbecue skewer with fennel, beetroot or pumpkin? We show you some typical and unusual recipes for your next barbecue party.

Our favorite recipes: vegetarian bbq ideas with vegetables

The classic with extra kick: corn on the cob with olive butter

A golden-brown corn on the cob from the grill whets your appetite! For the butter, simply chop 2 cloves of garlic, 60 grams of olives and some marjoram, mix them with salt under 125 butter and brush the cooked corn cobs with it before putting them on the grill to roast.

Vegetarian BBQ: Feta with tomatoes in aluminum foil

Another classic that will add a special flavor to your barbecue. On the grill, the tomatoes develop their pleasant flavor and make the cheese nice and juicy. For this recipe you need the slices of two tomatoes, some leek and basil and feta cheese. Put everything on a piece of baking paper about 30x30cm, season it with salt and pepper and wrap the mixture in an equally large piece of aluminum foil. The whole thing then goes on the grill for about 20 minutes before you can enjoy the aromatic feta cheese with tomatoes.

Vegetarian grilling: Skewers with mushrooms

A simple but delicious alternative to meat are marinated mushrooms on skewers. For a special taste, mix 3 tablespoons each of Ketjap Manis and Ketjap Asin soy sauce with 100 milliliters of olive oil and add thyme and oregano. Put the marinade with the mushrooms in a can with a lid and shake everything well. In order for the mushrooms to absorb the delicious flavor of the marinade, you should prepare the whole thing a day before grilling and leave it in the refrigerator overnight. Before grilling, put the mushrooms on the skewers and cook them on the grill for about 10 minutes.

For gourmets: grilled asparagus

Not in the mood for asparagus wrapped in bacon? Then try the vegetarian version from the grill. With white asparagus you have to peel the stalks completely, with green only the lower third. Brush olive oil over the asparagus and sprinkle with salt, pepper and a little sugar. Now comes the hard part: grill the stalks without letting them fall between the grill bars. After about 7 minutes per side, your asparagus is ready and can be served with some lemon balm.

Vegetarian bbq ideas for the sweet tooth: grilled bananas

Of course, a good meal should not be without dessert. And you can also prepare it on the grill. The sweeter mini bananas are particularly tasty. You can put them on the grill with their skin for about 6 minutes and turn them until they are brown on the outside. The flesh is then nice and warm and a bit chewy and you can carefully cut open the skin. Seasoned with a mixture of 3 tablespoons of brown sugar and 1 tablespoon of garam masala, they are ready to spoon out. Garam Masala is a spice blend that not everyone has in their cupboard. So if you don’t want to buy it separately, you can also use spices that are usually included in garam masala, for example black pepper and cardamom, cinnamon, cloves and cumin.

Vegetarian bbq ideas: Here’s what else you need to know

Grilled vegetables: What you need to know

If your vegetables are going on the grill, it’s especially important that they’re fresh. Especially varieties like tomatoes, which wilt quickly due to their high water content, should still be nice and juicy so they can develop their flavor well on the grill. Depending on which vegetables you choose, it takes 10 to 20 minutes until your food is cooked. In most cases, you’ll need to turn the vegetables in between or move them to a less hot spot on the grill to prevent them from burning. Nothing stands in the way of a vegetarian treat from the grill!

Vegetarian grilling meat substitute

You don’t want to have only vegetables on the grill? Then you can get creative with meat alternatives! For example, you can marinate tofu wonderfully – from spicy to sweet and sour, everything is possible. Tempeh can also be grilled, but also works great as a substitute for minced meat and can be used as a filling for wraps, which you can then put on the grill. If you would like to have vegetarian sausage on the grill, seitan is suitable for this, a product made from wheat protein, which you can get particularly easily in the Asian store.

Vegetarian grilling: Kids love burgers

Kids aren’t the only ones who will love these burgers with grilled veggie patties! To make them, boil 2 finely chopped carrots and 50 grams each of celery and leek in vegetable broth for 15-20 minutes and then puree them into small pieces. dice 2 mushrooms and half an onion and sauté them lightly. Then mix everything with 6 tablespoons of oatmeal and 4 tablespoons of spelt semolina and season with salt, pepper, parsley, garlic and paprika powder. After you have let the whole thing stand for 10 minutes, you can form the mixture into patties and put them on the grill (you may need a grill mat or something similar). They taste best on a wholemeal roll with fresh tomato and cucumber slices.

Grilling vegetarian wraps

Grilled vegetarian wraps are also especially delicious. For this recipe, first fry 2 onions and red peppers each, as well as 400 grams of mushrooms cut into strips in oil, then add small corn on the cob from a jar and a can of kidney beans and season everything with salt and pepper, paprika and taco seasoning. The mixture is then added to the previously warmed wraps along with a sauce made from two mashed avocados, two tablespoons of yogurt and finely chopped garlic cloves, and 100 grams of grated cheese. Wrap them up well before frying them on the grill until nice and crispy.

Vegetarian grilling made easy

Sometimes vegetarian grilling ideas take you the skill of a professional mikado to keep the tasty bits from falling into the ash. It’s easier if you put a grill tray on the grate, but it releases metal substances into your food and can only be used once. Therefore, Teflon-coated grill mats are healthier and more environmentally friendly. And if you still need a few tips for the perfect trimmings, you’ll also get inspiration for your garden party from us.
